Architekten von Gerkan, Marg und Partners has redesigned the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu stadium in Madrid, Spain.
In 2014, Architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners, together with L35 Arquitectos and Ribas & Ribas Arquitectos, won first prize in the competition to redesign the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid.
Opened in 1947, the stadium has undergone several renovations over the years. The new design provides a coherent overall concept for the first time, where its capacity of approximately 80,000 has been increased by nearly 2,000 seats.
A retractable pitch reveals a permanent floor slab, enabling a wide range of events to be staged beyond sport, while a retractable roof allows the stadium to adapt to all weather conditions.
This project has been longlisted in the civic project category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
