Kyriakos Tsolakis Architects has designed the National Star Observatory of Cyprus in Agridia, Cyprus.
The National Star Observatory of Cyprus, the country's first observatory, is located in the UNESCO-listed Troodos mountain range.
This project is a public institution in rural Cyprus that democratises science, revitalises a fading village and transforms a remote mountaintop into a national destination.
The observatory houses two high-tech telescopes, as well as an astro-marina for amateur astronomers, alongside other amenities.
Set in a remote village facing economic decline and population loss, its architecture intentionally creates a landmark destination — welcoming scientists and amateurs, drawing visitors, creating local employment and catalysing a microeconomy.
This project has been longlisted in the civic project category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
