Welsh + Major has designed the Pyrmont Community Centre, a refurbishment of a 140-year-old school building into a contemporary community facility in Sydney, Australia.

Built on Gadigal Land, the Pyrmont Community Centre is a continuum; a group of buildings from the late 1800s, 1990s and a new building completed this year.

"With the local area population expected to increase by 41% over the next 15 years, the need to increase the size of the centre was an imperative to meet future demand," said Welsh + Mayor.

As a result, the centre hosts over 50 community programs, including long daycare and after-school care, as well as providing flexible, resilient public spaces with improved accessibility and support facilities, and refurbished heritage spaces.

This project has been longlisted in the civic project category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
