MVRDV has designed Portlantis, a dynamic visitor centre in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Portlantis by MVRDV stands as a beacon on the western edge of Rotterdam's port, showcasing the daily operations and sustainable transformation of Europe's largest port through immersive architecture and exhibitions.

Responding to the Port of Rotterdam's ambition to share its history, operations and commitment to sustainability with the public, the building's five rotated floors strategically frame panoramic views that complement thematic exhibitions within.

A striking crimson-red staircase winds from ground level to the publicly accessible rooftop, where visitors can journey through exhibitions anchored by a 22-metre atrium featuring a kinetic maritime sculpture.

"Constructed using demountable components and circular materials, Portlantis generates 30% more energy than it consumes, symbolising the Port of Rotterdam’s dedication to an energy-efficient, sustainable future," said MVRDV.

This project has been longlisted in the cultural project category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
