Neiheiser Argyros and Esé Studio have designed the interiors of Aigli Zappeiou, a complex of two restaurants within the historic building of Aigli in Athens, Greece.

First constructed in 1904 as a small cafe adjacent to the famous neoclassical Zappeion hall, Aigli has been a hub of Athenian social life for more than 120 years.

However, it has also been a landmark, a common reference point in the city, an important part of the collective Athenian imagination.

The new Aigli builds on this legacy but aims to widen its reach to be more inclusive, democratic, open and dynamic.

"In designing the architecture of the new restaurants, we had to be careful archaeologists of this nuanced history, but also astute observers of the current culture of Athens," said Neiheiser Argyros.

This project has been shortlisted in the restaurant interior category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
