A+N Studio has designed Breathing Light, a deep breathing tool reducing stress and restoring mental energy, originally developed for 13 secondary schools in the Netherlands.

Breathing Light is a research-based deep breathing tool and energy-restoring light object, developed in close collaboration with an environmental psychologist and a light scientist.

It introduces moving spots of light replicating the gentle rhythm of breathing, encouraging you to breathe in a proven deep-breathing rhythm to help reduce stress.

The movement and colour changes are based on natural phenomena, in line with the Attention Restoration Theory (Kaplan, 1995).

In this way, the light object also serves as a backdrop, providing the optimal amount of stimuli for gazing at and engaging with, thereby restoring mental energy and enhancing focus and concentration.

This project has been shortlisted in the product design (health, wellbeing and wearables) category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
