Schemata Architects has designed the Teshima Factory on Teshima Island, Japan.

This project transforms a former ironworks near a main port of the island into a pair of twin programs – a restaurant and food factory – organised symmetrically within the existing structure.

Rooted in Teshima's long-standing practices of organic farming and fishing, it reinterprets the island's self-sustaining food culture as a new cycle of production and exchange, seeking to upcycle local values for future generations.

Conceived as a catalyst for new economic activity and a place attracting young practitioners, Teshima Factory divides the approximately 360-square-metre building into two continuous zones: a brewery adapted within the existing framework and a newly inserted restaurant.
