Milton Glaser designs Get Out The Vote graphic for US election

Graphic design legend Milton Glaser is among the designers who have created posters encouraging Americans to head to polling stations and vote in this year's presidential election.

Glaser, one of the world's most important graphic designers, produced the poster (main image) as part of the design organisation AIGA's Get Out The Vote campaign.

"Full participation in the electoral process protects our ideals," said the designer, who co-founded New York magazine and created the famous I Heart NY logo.

His design features simple colour blocks that form a ballot box and a voting slip. The slogan "To Vote is to Exist" is written on the front of the box, with the shorter words in small light green text and the longer ones displayed larger, in white.

Glaser frequently creates graphics with social messages. He previously designed a campaign to build awareness of climate change, and a poster to help raise funds following the devastating Japan earthquake of March 2011.

His latest design is part of a wider series of posters by AIGA members, urging American voters to participate in the election on 8 November 2016.

Over 100 designers have already contributed to the campaign, and all AIGA members are eligible to participate. The posters are all available to download from the organisation's website.

Each measures 11 by 17 inches, in A3 vertical format, so they can be easily printed out. The AIGA hopes that they will be displayed in public locations such as small businesses, workplaces and schools, particularly in areas with historically low voter turnouts.

The organisation will also mount exhibits in Cleveland, to coincide with the Republican National Convention from 18 to 21 July 2016, and in Philadelphia in conjunction with the Democratic National Convention from 25 to 28 July 2016. Displays will pop up in the State House in Arizona and in cities including Las Vegas, New York, Chicago and St Louis.

Also ahead of this year's US election, creative agency Design Army has produced chocolate packaging with illustrations aimed at voters with different political opinions.

Elsewhere in the world, graphic designer Wolfgang Tillmans has created a series of posters to encourage UK residents to vote to stay in the European Union in next month's referendum.
