Shortlisted for leisure and wellness interior of the year at Dezeen Awards 2019, The Retreat at Blue Lagoon Iceland by Basalt Architects and Design Group Italia is built directly into an 800-year-old lava flow.
Located in the the heart of the Reykjanes UNESCO Global Geopark, it encompasses a subterranean spa, geothermal lagoon, a restaurant that reimagines Iceland’s culinary traditions, and a 62-suite luxury hotel encircled by the Blue Lagoon’s mineral-rich waters. The Spa covers more than 4000 square meters and descends three meters into the volcanic earth.
Lava was incorporated to the interiors in innovative and beautiful ways, including custom-made lava rock tables with lava stone incorporated in a metal setting as a table top 'gem'; custom faucets by Axor (Hans Grohe), with lava piece decoration, custom furniture with lava detailing by B&B Italia, tiles and carpets patterns inspired by lava beauty and specially produced for the Retreat.
