Caterpillar is a 9,000 square foot, eight-unit residential project in Core City, Detroit.

The project was built with a cost-effective, prefabricated structure called a Quonset hut. By using a Quonset Hut and an engineered window placement strategy, the design was able to offer impressive volumes and natural daylight. Each unit features 12 to 18 windows and 23-foot ceilings. The interior volume offers flexibility with a loft like open space, while a central compact core offers utility. The landscape design is inspired by the image of a UFO crash landing in a forest with 150-tree urban woodland.

This project has been longlisted in the housing project category of Dezeen Awards 2021.
