Miller & Maranta has designed the conversion and extension of Gletschergarten Luzern in Denkmalstrasse, Switzerland.

This project was focused on the conversion and extension of the Gletschergarten Luzern, located at the foot of large sandstone rock in Lucerne.

By deconstructing the annexes of Schweiszerhaus, the park was able to be considerably enlarged and opened up the possibility of redefining it as a large landscape garden and dividing it into coherent areas.

The origin of the sandstone goes back to a marine beach that formed over 20 million years ago and the strong spatial atmosphere is created by the predominant material. From a depth of 30 metres, visitors can climb step by step towards the light and experience elementary natural phenomena.

Through the access portal, visitors can reach their very own world by lying on the rock. Gradually, visitors are embraced by the natural climate of the rock, creating a sense of warmth and peace within.

This project has been longlisted in the cultural building category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
