Surfacedesign has designed New Geologies, its first curated collection of outdoor furnishings.
Rendered from stone and aluminium, the New Geologies collection comprises seven functional, one-of-one furniture pieces.
Guided by an approach from Surfacedesign that "Begins with the ground, the geology of a place," this thought-provoking collection explores tectonic shifts and the potentials of stone to create a dialogue between context, landscape and material form.
Combining highly engineered aluminium with locally-sourced found boulders, 'trovanti', the contemporary arrangement showcases regionally specific metamorphic rock that speaks to a unique period in time.
For this collection, stone is sourced from a small valley near the Italian Alps and set within the historic gardens of Villa Bagatti Valsecchi – an exercise that examines timeless design through adaptation and the evolving shapes of natural forms.
This project has been longlisted in the bespoke design category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
