One Plus Partnership has designed the Luoyang Zhengda Opera House in Luoyang, China.

This project is located in Luoyang, one of China's ancient capital cities, which was a seat of power for 13 dynasties and is a saint city in respect of its historical and cultural background.

The Luoyang Zhengda Opera House has an open interior space that can accommodate thousands of spectators. The interior design is limited by the building construction – the long and narrow arc-shaped space looks like a valley and the glass curtain wall on one side restricts the design space further. This limitation had become the biggest challenge at the beginning of the design stage.

"We came up with 'peonies', a concept that’s strongly inspired by the local element," said designers One Plus Partnership. "The arc-shaped elements throughout the interior are an abstract way of resembling the petals of the peony in full bloom."

The petals of the peony in full bloom throughout the interior are an abstract way of resembling the dancers and singers – these combined with the organ pipes in various heights create the elongated organic decorative shapes throughout the space.

This project has been longlisted in the civic and cultural interiors category of Dezeen Awards 2022.
