Learning and Sports Center

Highly commended: Sustainable building of the year 2022.
General Architecture Collaborative has designed the Learning and Sports Centre in Masoro Village, Rwanda.

This project is located among the rolling hills of Rwanda and was designed by community members of a small rural farming village.

The Learning and Sports Centre takes the stance that sustainability goes beyond building performance. It encompasses sustaining communities through investment, inclusion, and advancement.

The project was designed, built and managed by the community it serves, and was created using local materials and combines traditional and advanced construction methods, utilising sustainable building practices. This centre offers facilities and programs to ensure access to education and wellness to all community members free of charge.

Judges comments: "Designed, built and operated by community members of a small rural farming village, this project goes beyond simply being a community hall. More than just bricks and mortar, it succeeds by creating a sustainable building rooted in social sustainability, empowering the local community through knowledge transfer in multiple ways."
