Örsjö Belysning has developed Essence, designed by Marie-Louise Hellgren, an upcycled, chargeable lamp crafted from leftover materials.

By utilising leftover materials from Örjsö's ordinary production and handblown circular glass produced by Glasbolaget in Bro, Örsjö has demonstrated that more innovative work can transform these materials into new designs, rather than sending them to recycling.

The idea from the beginning was to find a way to take care of the beautiful waste that is generated in our production of luminaires, lamps and chandeliers.

"Together with designer and dedicated upcycling specialist Marie-Louise Hellgren, we analysed the leftover materials generated daily that we can collect and use to design and produce a new lamp," said Örsjö.

"We targeted the volume products and selected a number of components such as pipes, metal sheets and other components and from this, we designed and created the new lamp Essence."

Essence comes in raw copper or brass and with a glass shade in two finishes: Misty and Cloudy. All glass shades are unique due to the production process using leftover glass material.

This project has been longlisted in the sustainable design category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
