Freitag Lab has designed the Mono[PA6]: Circular Backpack, made from a single material that can be entirely recycled at the end of life.

The Mono[PA6] Backpack is not only functional, durable and water-repellent but also fully recyclable and thus circular.

All 17 components of the backpack are made from one material, polyamide 6, PA6 for short, better known as nylon. Therefore, the backpack can be recycled as a whole at the end of its life and the granulate can be turned back into something new, like backpack components.

"Together with our Taiwanese partner, we have developed a waterproof mono-material fabric that is completely recyclable," said Freitag Lab.

The Mono[PA6] backpack is a lightweight everyday companion for the most diverse needs in urban life, where the detachable musette can also be worn as a practical crossbody bag.

This project has been longlisted in the material innovation category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
