Atelier Tao+C has designed and renovated Twin Lane-Houses in Shanghai, China.

This project is the merging and transformation of two adjacent lane-houses built in the 1930s into one twin lane-house.

By implanting a slender steel framework, the two dilapidated lane-houses were efficiently reinforced and stabilised, which made it possible to remove part of the middle wall.

Merged into one unit yet separable, the twin houses retain the comfortable and quiet qualities of traditional lane-houses, but are also playfully flexible.

Via sculptural stairs and a double-height void, the third floor opens into a vast, unified area under the pitched roofs, integrating the main bedroom, living space and dressing room.

In addition, large south-facing windows on the first and second floors frame views of lush greenery outside.

This project has been longlisted in the house renovation category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
