Akasaki & Vanhuyse have designed WA, a sustainably developed table lamp, for Tokyu Corporation.
WA is a table lamp made from reused parts of Tokyu Corporation's retired trains. Around 1,400 white resin rings, used initially as strap handles on the Den-en-toshi line in Tokyo, were collected and turned into 150 lighting pieces.
These pure forms inspired a lampshade that gently filters the light. By reusing parts in their original form, the designers avoided unnecessary processing and retained surface marks that tell their story.
In addition, the polished stainless-steel structure brings value to the upcycled design.
As a result, the lamp is built to last while considering end-of-life disassembly.
This project has been longlisted in the lighting design category of Dezeen Awards 2025.
