Sordo Madaleno has designed the Arte Abierto Baja in Los Cabos, Mexico.

Arte Abierto Baja is the first public contemporary art gallery in Los Cabos – a permanent addition to the cultural life of a region where the Pacific and the Gulf of California meet against a rocky, biodiverse coastline.

The 180 square-metre open-air space brings Mexican and international artists into dialogue with the landscape of Baja California Sur.

Sitting four metres below grade at the seaward end of Ánima Village, the gallery is reached by a gently sloping 17-metre ramp.

As visitors descend, the walls rise and the activity of the village above recedes – arriving at a space held between earth and open air.
