Staple Studio and Kiyoaki Takeda Architects have designed the SOIL Nihonbashi Hotel in Tokyo, Japan.

This project is a newly built 14-room hotel by Staple in Tokyo's Nihonbashi-Ningyocho district, designed to extend hospitality into the surrounding neighbourhood.

The building takes its cues from a generations-old local practice: neighbours sharing and propagating over 100 varieties of plants along the backstreets.

Rust-red corrugated steel curves around the facade like rows of terracotta planters – while a rooftop farm garden supplies the ground-floor pizzeria.

One node in a walkable network of Staple-run spaces – a bakery, wine bar and co-working space – built to last in the neighbourhood it serves.
