Office of Toru Teraoka (OOTT) has designed the Three Roofs Timber Hall in Karuizawa, Japan.

Set in the forests of Karuizawa, this project explores architecture as a device that mediates the relationship between humans and nature.

Developed over nearly a decade through collaboration, Three Roofs Timber Hall forms part of a landscape with dog-friendly facilities and open spaces.

Instead of dissolving boundaries, the building carefully frames them, allowing the forest to visually pass through while maintaining enclosure – a three-layered roof brings soft daylight, creating a calm atmosphere.

Using simple timber and local craftsmanship, with minimal concrete and metal, this project demonstrates how modest means can produce a refined environmental response.
