Winner: Hospitality project of the year 2023. Vari Design has conceptualised and developed the JII Chuan project in Yuzhong, China.

The Jiefang Monument in the old city of Yuzhong, Chongqing, has practised another kind of urban renewal in Jili – a bustling commercial core area.

"In front of the fast-paced urban interface, we created a black box in the style of a Soviet courtyard," said Vari Design. "The restrained materials allow the facade to blend with the surrounding streetscape environment."

In the interior space, smooth lines are used to weaken the edges and corners of the walls and are paired with black and grey wood and slate panels to create a majestic texture of mountains and valleys.

"Abstraction broadens perception, restraint and rigour focus the vision, thereby creating the ultimate memory of the scene," added Vari Design.
