Frankfurt designer Kai Linke has created a series of vases and side tables by sand-blasting timber to enhance the texture of the grain then casting the resulting shapes in ceramic.

Linke presented the new pieces in his ongoing Blasted Familii series at Tendence fair in Frankfurt last month.

"Blasted Familii is a series of simple, blasted objects made out of spruce wood," he explains.

"The objects appear to be rough and aged but at the same time the wooden relief tells another story."

I guess Kai got really inspired by his internship at studio Makkink & Bey….. not that sandblasting was invented by them, but he got to see lots of woodgrain during his time there. Well,.. it is hard to be original, let’s focus in making relevant/good designs and research instead.
I'm surprised about the sculptural refinement of such a simple technique. These are beautiful pieces!
All I can see is a copy of an older ceramic design by a New Zealand designer Stephanie Donald: http://stephaniedonald.com/WoodFrameset.html
Looks just like the wood-like range of ceramics that New Zealand designer Stephanie Donald produced in 2005 which won her an award – http://www.stephaniedonald.com/WoodFrameset.html
