Dezeen promotion: electronics company LG Display has revealed its plans to create new OLED lighting designs with British designer Ross Lovegrove.
LG Display made the announcement during this year's World Architecture Festival (WAF) in Berlin, where it also showcased its new generation OLED lighting – short for organic light-emitting diodes.
Lovegrove said that he chose to partner with LG Display to explore the benefits of its OLED light panels – a light source that creates illumination across a surface rather than from a point.
"Through collaboration with Lovegrove, the master of organic design, the possibilities of OLED lighting as an architectural and interior design lighting source will be publicised," said the brand, which has previously worked with Israeli architect Ron Arad.
"Lovegrove decided to actively engage in the collaboration after developing a high level of interest in the advanced technological prowess and innovation of OLED lighting," they continued.
The designer discussed his expectations and the future direction of his collaboration with LG Display at the Inside Festival of interior design, which takes place annually in conjunction with WAF.
The new OLEDs will be set in frames and unveiled at international lighting festival Euroluce in Milan next year.
"New framed lighting applications applying innovative advantages of the OLED light panel will inspire creators who visit Milan a new way for lighting and space," explained the brand.
As sponsor for both WAF and the Inside Festival, LG Display wanted to show the potential of OLEDs, which are thin and lightweight to offer flexible lighting solutions for a variety of interior design and architecture projects.
Iconic designer Lovegrove has created a range of products throughout his career, including sculptural lights and a pavilion made from stretch-foil, an aluminium stacking chair and a walnut seat with a continuous curving structure.
World Architecture Festival ran from 16 to 18 November 2016 in Arena Berlin.
