Hay collaborates with Danish chef to create range of kitchen accessories

Danish design brand Hay has collaborated with chef Frederik Bille Brahe to release a collection of kitchenware, including pots, pans, sponges and cups.

The Hay Kitchen Market collection is made up of what the brand terms "fundamental accessories" – pots and pans, cutting boards, plates, cups, glasses and cutlery.

When designing the collection, Mette Hay – the company's co-founder and creative director of its accessories section – enlisted the help of Bille Brahe, a Danish chef.

The pair had already worked together to open a cafe during last year's Milan design week, which saw Hay take over a 2000-square-metre space named La Pelota.

"After opening a cafe with Frederik at the 2016 Milan Design Week, [Hay] was inspired to analyse and define what aspects create a useful and yet intriguing kitchen," said the brand.

"Through their mutual dedication to quality and design, Hay Kitchen Market offers a special selection of kitchen accessories, while providing a platform for skilled designers."

Each piece in the Kitchen Market collection is inspired by Bille Brahe's industrial-style kitchen, as well as different local cultures experienced by Hay on her travels.

"Though the collection presents products readily available from around the world, such as handmade glasses from Morocco, water pitchers from India, and sponges from Japan, everything has been reinvented, repurposed, or skilfully curated for the collection," said the brand.

"The considerable selection of textures and colours, coupled with the wide-ranging prices, allows for the individual to create an assortment customise products to their preference."

As well as pieces designed in-house, the collection features accessories by the likes of Big-Game, Shane Schneck, Clara Von Zweigbergk, Richard Woods and George Sowden.

To launch the collection, Hay has worked alongside the MoMA Design Store in New York's Soho. The pieces will be available exclusively at the store until mid-September.

Hay was founded by husband and wife team Rolf and Mette Hay in 2002 and has gone on to become one of the biggest Scandinavian design brands in the world – experiencing at least 30 per cent growth each year for the past decade.

Hay largely pioneered the trend for furniture brands launching accessories, when it began selling smaller-sized pieces in 2008. It has since gone on to pursue the Asian market, launching its first Chinese store in Shanghai two years ago and opening a second in the city earlier this year.

The brand has also recently collaborated with IKEA on a collection set to launch in October 2017.

Hay was ranked at number 30 on Dezeen Hot List, a data-based power ranking of design and architecture's biggest names.
