Dezeen's architecture and design videos received over 60 million plays in 2017 – double the figure from last year. Continuing our review of the year, digital editor Trudie Carter reveals the 10 captioned movies that went viral.


Petit Pli clothing expands to fit children as they grow

A range of expandable children's clothing became the breakout graduate project of the year, after our captioned Facebook video on the project amassed nearly five million views.

The stretchy garments, by Royal College of Art's Ryan Mario Yasin, went on to win the James Dyson Award for best student invention in the UK.

Drone footage captures brutalist Robin Hood Gardens ahead of imminent demolition

Dezeen flew a drone over Robin Hood Gardens, just weeks before demolition began. The film captures the doomed housing estate's boarded-up windows and empty "streets in the sky".

The decision to bulldoze proved controversial, but the brutalist building won't be forgotten – it recently it topped the Twentieth Century Society's list of lost architectural treasures, plus the V&A has acquired a one-bedroom flat from the building.

Saudi Arabia becomes first country to grant citizenship to a robot

Saudi Arabia hit headlines this year after becoming the first nation to grant citizenship to an AI device.

The robot, who is called Sophia, showed off her conversational skills and facial expressions in this candid interview.

Lego releases drone footage of BIG's Lego House nearing completion

Ahead of the opening of its BIG-designed visitor centre, Lego offered a preview of the structure via drone.

The footage showcases its stacked-block formation and brightly coloured patios, which are designed to resemble the company's famous toy bricks.

Dinara Kasko's sculptural cakes are carved from sheets of chocolate

Food-related videos dominate on Facebook, and these geometric tarts by architect-turned-patisserie chef  Dinara Kasko are testament to that.

The project is a collaboration between artist José Margulis and Kasko, who strives to turn 3D dimensional artworks into sculptural desserts.

Brexit passport design competition shortlist revealed

Early this year Dezeen announced a competition to come up with a design for the UK's passport post-Brexit. We received over 200 entries from 34 different countries, and our video of the nine shortlisted designs was picked up by national media – including BBC TV show Daily Politics.

Scottish graphic designer Ian Macfarlane's entry with a transitional cover was eventually chosen as the winner.

Tadao Ando surrounds huge buddha statue with lavender-covered mound at Sapporo cemetery

This movie offers a tour of the Sapporo cemetery, where Japanese architect Tadao Ando has concealed a stone statue of the buddha within a hill covered in lavender plants.

The video reveals the full impact of the intervention – prompting one reader to comment that it gave them a "religious experience".

MIT Self-Assembly Lab's Rapid Liquid Printing technology can "print furniture in minutes"

A radical new form of 3D printing turned heads earlier this year, when researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology claimed they could print large objects much quicker using gel, rather than traditional methods.

Foster and Heatherwick complete Shanghai theatre with curtain-like facade

This movie showcasing the kinetic facade of a theatre by Foster + Partners and Thomas Heatherwick featured in our Facebook video series dedicated to moving buildings.

Inspired by traditional Chinese theatres, the building's facade is made up of bronze tubes that hang in three layers and can be moved into multiple configurations.
