Anno's Journey: The World of Anno Mitsumasa
by SoHoKo

Andy Stagg

Japan House London curated the first UK exhibition of works by Anno Mitsumasa, an artist known for his watercolours, papercuts and illustrated children's books.

SoHoKo's design drew on Anno's birthplace of Tsuwano, which is surrounded by hills.

Mountain walls created a bright perimeter of chronological works whilst enclosing a dark, central reading area: visitors could read sitting on cushions, leaning against the sloping walls.

At the entrance, Anno's Toad Oil papercut story was enlarged to make a room that displays the original book.

This project has been longlisted in the exhibition design project category of Dezeen Awards 2020.
