Shortlisted for Dezeen Awards 2023 Bentley Lighthouse Award, Jan Boelen is the founder and artistic director of circular-design lab Atelier Luma in the south of France.

Atelier Luma is the design research program of LUMA Arles dedicated to exploring new ways of using natural and renewable resources in design and architecture.

The studio brings together a collaborative team of designers, engineers, scientists, and experts from the fields of culture, craftsmanship, humanities, and social sciences and innovation, who explore the potential of materials such as invasive plants, agricultural co-products, algae, and industrial waste.

In 2023, Atelier Luma launched its new workspace Le Magasin Électrique, to showcase locally sourced, organic methods of construction. Sunflowers, salt and algae where among the biomaterials used to complete Le Magasin Électrique.

Jan Boelen has been shortlisted in the Bentley Lighthouse Award category of Dezeen Awards 2023.
