O'Neill Rose Architects has designed Design Studies Collaborative in New York City, United States.

This project transforms a neglected local landmark in Brooklyn into a serene, contemplative workspace.

Originally a social club, the building became a dance hall and later a church, before falling into disrepair.

"Our client, Design Studies Collaborative, wanted a resourceful, inventive new home; our design centres on re-use," said O'Neill Rose Architects.

"We preserved the original building and utilised found materials throughout: wood abandoned due to rain damage, stone salvaged from a defunct stoneyard, surplus handmade tiles."

As a result, the new design provides workspaces, a community gathering area and a maker's space – while new openings allow daylight to fill the space and a perforated steel stair floats from the skylight.
