Lucy Sparrow tackles "prudery" with stitched sex shop in London's Soho

British artist Lucy Sparrow is filling an adults-only shop in London's Soho district with sex toys, porn magazines and bondage gear all made of felt.

The installation, titled Madame Roxy's Erotic Emporium, will open next month and include over 5,000 sex-related products that have been stitched together by hand.

Penis enlargers, lubricant packaging and dirty DVD covers are all constructed from wool felt and decorated with sparkly thread, glitter glue, sequins and paint.

The project is a response to the transformation of Soho from a hub of seedy institutions to a hotbed of commercial chains, as well as the recent censorship of types of pornography in the UK.

Gareth Pugh also paid tribute to the area's infamous nightlife with his Spring Summer 2016 collection, while Lee Broom designed a prostitution-themed restaurant in the neighbourhood as a tribute to its insalubrious history.

"While London's Soho undergoes sterilisation with strip clubs and sex shops being swept away in favour of trendy wine bars and hipster coffee shops, so Britain's laws on pornography are also being cleansed, with the prohibition of the depiction of practices like face-sitting, female ejaculation and even whipping," said Sparrow.

"Does a porn magazine created from felt and hand-stitched break Britain's new porn laws?" she asked.

The project moves on from Sparrow's more family-friendly Felt Cornershop, which was installed in east London last year.

She has continued her use of hand stitching, but has created slightly more risqué products than the cans of spam and tins of beans that populated the shelves of the previous shop.

The items stocked in Madame Roxy's Erotic Emporium include various sex aids – all stitched by Sparrow over the past six months.

She has replicated existing products and graphics from well-known brands and publications, but also included more niche items.

"The show gives the opportunity for those who know little of the sex retail industry to satisfy their curiosity without the need for floor-length trench coats and dark glasses," said the artist.

Sparrow drew on her own previous experiences as a lap dancer – a job she took to help fund her early art career – when creating the installation.

This project is designed as "a comment on the increasingly prudish attitude towards sex workers and adult entertainment".

Madame Roxy's Erotic Emporium will open daily from 12-8pm at 2 Green's Court from 4 to 17 October 2015. Strictly no under 18s.
