Chiang Mai-based studio Sher Maker designed its own workspace to house its multidisciplinary practice.
Sher Maker comprises a team of craftspeople who work across architecture, interiors and design, and is known for its considered use of local technology and experimentation with local materials.
For its own studio the practice aimed to create an inspiring space that blended the interior with the outdoors, letting in the atmosphere of the surrounding rural space.
The building sits on a previously vacant lot lined with acacia trees and has a wooden and steel frame structure with a metal gable roof. Other materials, such as bricks from a neighbourhood kiln, ground it in its local context.
To maintain harmony with the surrounding environment, parts of the roof were cut to allow trees and other plants to pass through as they grow.
The master jury for interiors included London-based architect Ben Allen, Julie Eizenberg of KoningEizenberg Architecture, Amit Gupta of STIR, Petra Blaisse of Dutch studio Inside Outside, South London-based interior designer Alexandria Dauley and interior designer Susie McLaren of SHH.
The jury, which met virtually on Tuesday 14 September to select the winners, stated: "This is a workspace people dream about since Covid. It is ideal, in the countryside, open with nature inside and outside."
"It is an inside and outside space with a very simple structure and creates a beautifully simple shared space. The studio has reinvented something simple in an elegant way."
