Ten furniture and lighting designs by Japanese brands and designers

Dezeen Showroom: to coincide with annual design festival Designart Tokyo, we've rounded up 10 furniture and lighting designs by Japanese artisans and brands that have been featured on Dezeen Showroom.

Included in the selection are outdoor lantern lamps, sculptural tables and carved wooden chairs designed by Japan-based brands including Koyori, Karimoku and Time & Style.

Designart Tokyo takes place from 21 to 30 October at various locations across the city, hosting exhibitions and presentations on architecture, interiors, product design and art.

Kawara Armchair by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for Koyori

Japanese design brand Koyori collaborated with Paris-based designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec to create the Kawara Armchair, which has a classic shape designed for dining or meeting room settings.

According to designer Ronan Bouroullec, the chair evokes high-quality Japanese craftsmanship and its box-like shape provides a comfortable place to sit.

Sculpture Casting Bronze table by Time & Style

Sculpture Casting Bronze table by Time & Style

The Sculpture Casting Bronze table features a large base created by a metal casting technique that is traditionally used in Japan to sculpt Buddhist statues and objects.

Designed by Japanese brand Time & Style, the sculptural metal base is topped with an elliptical oak tabletop that is available in two sizes.

Eterble fabric tablecloths by Eterble

Japanese tableware brand Eterble has launched a range of tablecloths in a neutral colour palette made from recycled fabric.

The brand sourced tablecloths discarded from weddings, hotels and function rooms and reused the fibres to weave the new Eterble tablecloths.

Bell table, wall and floor lamps by Japanese brand Seiki Design Studio

Bell lamp by Seiki Ishii for Seiki Design Studio

Kyoto-based designer Seiki Ishii created a mobile lamp made from recycled glass for his namesake firm, Seiki Design Studio.

The Bell lamp has a bell-shaped lampshade topped with a blue loop, which can be used to hang the light on a wall-mounted hook or floor stand.

Sou sofa by Teruhiro Yanagihara for Offecct

The Sou sofa is comprised of a wooden base that can be combined with different cushioned seat options, created by Japanese designer Teruhiro Yanagihara for Swedish furniture manufacturer Offecct.

According to Yanagihara, the sofa's minimalist silhouette was designed to reference both Japanese and Scandinavian design traditions.

Spectrum Workstation Round ST160 by Geckeler Michels for Karimoku

Crafted from Japanese oak, the Spectrum Workstation Round ST160 table was designed by German studio Geckeler Michels and Japanese furniture manufacturer Karimoku to be both beautiful and efficient.

The table features a circular cable tunnel at its centre, which disguises messy cables while keeping them easily accessible.

Cachalot lamp by Ambientec features on Dezeen Showroom

Cachalot lamp by Yoshiki Matsuyama for Ambientec

Product designer Yoshiki Matsuyama designed the portable Cachalot lamp, which has a shape informed by the body of a whale, for Japanese brand Ambientec.

The lamp is made up of an LED light unit within a sculptural acrylic case, which is mounted on a die-cast zinc base.

DC10 chair by Inoda + Sveje for Miyazaki Chair Factory

The DC10 chair has a frame made from a carved piece of wood that was designed by furniture studio Inoda + Sveje to showcase the colour and grain of the natural material.

Available from Japanese furniture manufacturer Miyazaki Chair Factory, the chair is constructed using a combination of handcrafting and CNC technology.

Black, grey, white and red TO side tables by Plank

TO side tabe by Naoto Fukasawa for Plank

TO is a minimalist side table with a circular base and tabletop, created by Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa for Italian design brand Plank.

The table is made from four-millimetre-thick steel that is available in agate grey, quartz grey, black red and black powdered-coated finishes.

Two black outdoor lamps by Poltrona Frau

Sparkler Lanterns by Kensaku Oshiro for Poltrona Frau

Japanese designer Kensaku Oshiro has created the Sparkler Lantern outdoor lamp for Italian furniture brand Poltrona Frau.

Available in three sizes, the lamp has a perforated shell made from woven polypropylene rope that casts patterns of light and shadow.
