World Architecture Festival 2014 awards shortlist announced

World Architecture Festival 2014: the shortlist for this year's World Architecture Festival awards has been announced, including a cyclone-proof house, an Australian plant archive, an underground maritime museum by BIG and OMA's colossal De Rotterdam skyscraper (+ slideshow).

The World Architecture Festival (WAF) shortlist includes completed buildings and future projects from over 50 countries, with buildings by Zaha Hadid, Studio Gang and Foster + Partners as well as many projects by emerging practices, submitted across 30 categories.

Other shortlisted projects include Europe's largest public library by Mecanoo, a Buddhist temple in Singapore, and a hotel by Neri&Hu in a 3,000-year-old Chinese city.

"From small structures to industrial complexes, the breadth of projects shortlisted this year reveals the diversity and strength of global architectural design," WAF programme director Paul Finch told Dezeen.

"It also demonstrates the creativity and tenacity of the international architectural community in creating these truly remarkable schemes."

The awards have received a surge in entries from Asia, with a large number of projects based in Malaysia, Vietnam and China, by architects including Vo Trong NghiaNeri&Hu and OMA.

A small projects category has also been added this year, as the award judges expressed the need to highlight design skill that had a disproportionate relationship to the physical size of a project.

Overall category winners will be announced during the festival, which takes place from 2 to 4 October at the Marina Bay Sands resort in Singapore. One project will also go on to win the World Building of the Year, decided by a super jury led by British architect Richard Rogers.
