Airbnb is a short-term holiday-rental platform with headquarters in San Francisco. It was founded by designers Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia, and Nathan Blecharczyk, after Chesky and Gebbia came up with the idea of renting out an air bed in their loft apartment to help pay their rent.

The site launched in 2008. It often lists properties with unusual architectural and design features, including a holiday cabin fueled by leftover coffee grounds and a zero-emissions cabin in Finland.

The company is making its mark on the architecture community with its Backyard initiative, which aims to release a new housing prototype by the end of 2019, and its refugee housing programme, Open Homes. Airbnb is also known for its often quirky office interiors.
