Dutch fashion studio ByBrown has created a windproof and waterproof dress for staying dry while cycling in the city.

Made from a breathable membrane fabric, ByBrown's Raindress is intended to be a more stylish way for female cyclists to protect themselves from bad weather.

"By marrying technology and fashion, I have tried to create the ideal wet-weather style," said Bybrown creative director Melanie Brown, who describes the product as the "world's first designer wet-weather dress".

The dress is designed to be worn as an outer layer over everyday outfits. The shape of the tailored garment forms a hooded poncho, which buttons up at the neck and extends down at the front to provide protection for the legs.

Loops on the underside fit around each leg to ensure the dress doesn't slip off while cycling. A sash on each side allows the wearer to draw in the material at the waist.

"I want a woman to put this on and feel fabulous and ultimately make rain a positive thing, something worth dressing up for," said Brown. "I aim to change the face of urban rainwear for women."

A reflective strip runs vertically over the hood and down the back of the garment.

The Raindress folds down into a bag that comes with an integrated strap, and is available in black, blue and khaki green in three sizes.

The design was first presented during the Spring Summer 2015 edition of Amsterdam Fashion Week.

As cycling becomes increasingly popular in cities around the world, designers are creating more for riders to wear. These include fashion designer Sara Henrichs, who launched a range of high-visibility clothing for nighttime biking, and Marlies Schets who wove a collection of accessories from retro-reflective thread so they become luminous after dark.
