Winner: Leisure Design of the Year 2018. D is the world's first reusable tampon applicator, designed by London-based studio Dame.
The reusable, self-cleaning applicator was designed by start-up company Dame in response to the billions of single-use plastic applicators that are thrown away every year. D offers women a more sustainable alternative to the currently disposable counterparts.
Dame co-founders Celia Pool and Alex Mills decided to design the device after research showed that 60 per cent of women prefer to use tampons with an applicator. Pool and Mills describe D as a "period product for the 21st-century".
Made up of two sections and a protective lid, D is designed to be used with non-applicator tampons. Unlike those already on the market, it's made from an antibacterial medical-grade material, so that it can be used over and over again.
According to the designers, the applicator will last a lifetime.
Judges comments: This design displays an admirable effort to reduce disposable plastic and an interesting use of nanotechnology.
