Maggie's Centre Barts
by Steven Holl Architects

Winner: Hospitality Building of the Year 2018. Maggie’s Centre Barts was designed by Steven Holl for Maggie’s, an organisation that provides support to cancer patients and their families.

With a facade of translucent white glass dotted with coloured panels, the three-storey Maggie’s centre in London was imagined by New York studio Steven Holl Architects as a "vessel within a vessel within a vessel".

The luminous Maggie's Barts features a concrete frame, a layer of perforated bamboo and a skin of matt glass. The interior character of the building is shaped by coloured light pouring in, changing by the time of day and season.

The centre is located on a site dating back to the 12th century, at St Bartholomew's Hospital, the oldest hospital in Britain, northwest of the City of London.

Judges comments: "This is a good statement to understand how we can expand the concept of hospitality to include solace, care and communality. An interesting semi-translucent take on an existing stone hospital, this building successfully deals with the complex historical context whilst balancing openness with privacy."
